The Suvivors Project

This film examines the growing problem of gun violence within the Caribbean. The Caribbean region has some of the highest rates of gun violence per capita in the world. The issue muct then be raised as to the approaches that should be taken in order to address this epidemic.

The Survivors Project: Voices from the Inside-Out! is a Skylarc Production and explores the traumatic impact and implications of gun violence on young people and young, black men in particular, living in low-income, racialized neighbourhoods. The film follows the story of a Grenadian born ex-gang member from "The Town" in Rexdale, Toronto, Canada.

This viewing takes place at the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination on April 2, 2008 @ 7:00pm.

Following the screening there will be a panel discussion featuring professionals in the areas of education, law enforcement, crime, social work and mental health. The aim is to heighten awareness to the importance of establishing crisis response/trauma interventions in Barbados.

Come and see one of our young film makers address an issue that should be of national concern to all of us.

Riotously Funny!

They all had a good time in a packed St. Gabriel's School hall and an audience predisposed to laughter. After all they were coming to see what is now a fixture on the Barbados theatre scene - "Laff-It-Off". In today's world there isn't much that you can say was worth every penny. This production was value for money and was worth every cent. This was a production that would appeal to the senses of most Barbadians and managed to be as topical as you could get.

These days of course there is nothing more topical than the Barbados General Elections and every effort was made by the script writers to be neutral and pardon me if I say inclusive! The caricatures of the politicians were tastefully done - which is moreso a credit to the script writers than to some of the politicians that were portrayed. It was nice too that some were in the audience! The performance touched on some serious issues too-like the fact that living from pay cheque to pay cheque does not amount to wealth creation - no matter how big the cheque might be. Laff-It-Off is getting better and better - more professional and more high quality humour.

The blend of the traditional and new performers was also excellent - keeping the production fresh and relevant to its audience!

The Cicely Spencer-Cross production was in no small measure also a tribute to Wendell Smith who had played the traditional role of Cranston Pollard. The live performances by the cast was also supported by video footage from this stalwart of the stage.

Take a bow cast and crew!
